Subway Cell Service: Sweet Dream or Beautiful Nightmare?

So it’s a real thing! I feel like I’m living in the future. Cell phone service underground! Who would have thought this could ever be a reality?

Well, since we’ve been to the moon a bajillion times I figured it would happen sooner or later.  Don’t get too excited, it’s only in about 3 stations right now (along 14th st. at the A, C, E, F, L, M and No. 1, 2 and 3 platforms & the C and E train station at 23rd Street) and is only available for AT&T and  T-Mobile. BUT the glorious MTA has promised that “most stations” should have this new feature by 2016.

You know, in five years when cellphones are obsolete and we are communicating via ESP. My only real hope is that by then the MTA will be obsolete with the invention of teleportation. (I’m not bitter, I swear.)

New Yorkers seem torn as to whether this new addition is a bless or a curse. Will the plus sides of having service underground also bring commutes of loud conversations in ear-piercing accents for the rest of our days?
